We headed about 1 hour northeast of Fairbanks to the Chena Hot Springs. The hot springs was founded over 100 years ago and has grown into a famous hot springs resort. It uses a lot of high tech to operate. For instance, it uses two 200kW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) geothermal energy power plants to generate electricity, the first in Alaska. They are working on several alternative energy projects, including production and use of hydrogen and vegetable oil for fuel. The resort is conducting experiments in greenhouse production of vegetables with the University of Alaska.
The spring itself was very nice. The water was 102 degrees and the bottom of the spring was covered with small pea gravel. After some soaking, we ate a late lunch at their restaurant. Many of their vegetables are grown right on their property.
