Talkeetna

We are camping at the Mat-Su RV Park for the next 2 nights. The campground is close to Talkeetna, a friendly little country town. After we set up the camper we headed off to Talkeetna to do some sightseeing (and catch a bite to eat).

Talkeetna gets lots of visitors for being a small town. One reason is that it serves as the base for air taxi operators specialized in flying to Mt. Denali. They will even land on the mountain using a plane outfitted with skis.  It also serves as a base for fishermen and sightseers to boat on the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers. The town is very small, but has many little restaurants and stores selling arts and crafts.  We enjoyed spending the day there and talking to the people.

Interesting Facts We learned Today:

  • This is an odd fact, but a tabby cat named Stubb's served as the town mayor for 16 years until his retirement in 2015.
  • Many Alaskans use Amazon Prime to purchase goods.  They get free shipping, but sometimes it will take up to 10 days to receive the goods.
  • Many Alaskans fly to Hawaii for vacation.  With the shape of the earth, it is only a 6 hr trip from Anchorage and they can get some pretty cheap flights.
  • Alaskans also can fly to Iceland for a vacation. They flights go over the North Pole and they can get there a lot quicker than flying eastward.
